Living in the capital city, students at Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington have a proud history of political engagement. However, it is easy to feel powerless when one can see the Beehive from campus but cannot have any discernable impact on what goes inside. As the local youth branch of the Labour Party, VicLabour provides a pathway for students to have substantive impact on government policy, and an opportunity to campaign and affect politics directly. As 2026 is an election year, this ability to impact politics is more important than ever. Consequently, VicLabour plans to be highly active both on campus and across the city, fostering a positive political environment and a strong student voice. To achieve this we intend to run over fifteen events throughout the year, approximately one a fortnight.

We need clubs funding to help fund these events. VicLabour currently operates on donations from former members, as well as personal funding from executive members to pay for food, stickers, etc. This has made funding our events difficult, which range from simple branch meetings of the club to large events at Parliament. All of these require us to cater food for those that attend, alongside venue hire and other expenses. Clubs funding would allow us to increase both the quality and volume of events we provide for our students.

We are also seeking funding for non-events expenses. This includes club merchandise, such as stickers, branded pens, shirts for our volunteers, etc. We will purchase these in-bulk from economical suppliers to keep costs down. We are also seeking funding for travel expenses for our planned campaigning actions throughout the year. We want our volunteers to be able to attend campaign events throughout the region, and therefore intend to cover transport costs (i.e. Public Transport fees, Petrol) for our members.

An election year means heightened interest in VicLabour as a club on Campus, further exacerbated by the current political environment. We want to capitalise on that interest and help students interested in politics become more involved.

On behalf of Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, we’re very pleased to confirm approval of funding support for your club. This funding is made possible through the Student Services Levy, with a portion set aside each year to help clubs deliver meaningful activities and create positive experiences for their members.

Purpose: costs associated with various club events in 2026

We’re delighted to be able to support your club. Student clubs play a vital role in enriching campus life, creating connection, and offering valuable opportunities for skill‑building and leadership. We hope this funding helps you deliver engaging and enjoyable support and experiences for your members.

Payment will be processed to the club bank account you provided, with funds expected to be transferred late‑April. Please note that, due to ongoing budget constraints, future funding levels may vary. We recommend keeping this in mind when planning events for 2027.

To help us celebrate and promote the great work clubs do, we would love to receive a photo of your members enjoying club activities or using funded equipment. Images can be uploaded to your club’s SharePoint folder or sent directly to the University Clubs Support Team at [email protected].

For audit and funding compliance purposes, once the allocated funds have been used, please complete the attached Reconciliation Form and provide copies of receipts for each item or service purchased. If your original funding request needs to change due to unforeseen circumstances, please let us know before reallocating any funds.
