Save Our Clubs At Victoria University of Wellington

Save Our Clubs is a student-led organisation protecting and strengthening clubs and societies at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. We campaign to keep clubs independent and to properly fund the communities students build.

Standing up for student-led clubs

Save Our Clubs is an independent student-led lobby group working to protect and strengthen clubs and societies at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington.

We combine leading research, communications, public campaigning, media engagement, and direct advocacy to ensure decisions about clubs are not made quietly or without scrutiny. We have brought previously overlooked proposals and funding decisions into public view, built support among students and club leaders, and made club policy an issue University decision-makers cannot ignore.

Our mission is clear. Student clubs should be independent, properly resourced, and accountable to their members. We campaign for better funding, skilled staff, practical support, and transparent decision-making. When proposals threaten club autonomy or fail to address the real problems clubs face, we organise, investigate, communicate, and act.

Our Campaigns

Two priorities for student clubs

Save Our Clubs runs two connected campaigns under one umbrella.

Campaign One

Keep Clubs Independent

Opposing changes that would transfer, centralise, or reduce the independence of student clubs. Clubs should stay democratic, member-led, and free of unnecessary bureaucracy.

Campaign Two

Fund Our Clubs

Calling on the University to grow the club grants pool and improve staffing, facilities, equipment, training, and event support so clubs can thrive long term.

WHY STUDENT CLUBS MATTER

When clubs are at stake, we make sure they are heard

Around 300 clubs and societies create communities, organise events, develop student leaders, and provide opportunities that do not exist in the lecture theater. Yet this entire network is supported by only about 1.5 full-time equivalent staff.

A strong university needs a strong student community. That depends on clubs having the freedom to lead themselves and the resources to succeed. Save Our Clubs works to build influence with students, in the media, and with decision-makers so that clubs are taken seriously when the future of student life is being decided.

Oppose the Transfer of Student Club Administration from VUW to VUWSA

Dear VUW and VUWSA,

I oppose the proposal to transfer student club administration from the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) to the Students' Association (VUWSA).

I stand with the Save Our Clubs campaign at saveourclubs.nz in calling on you to shelve it entirely.
