Event details
To support our visions and continue operating as a beneficial club for the student community in Wellington, WMSO draws upon the available funding pools and resources at Victoria University as best as we could. WMSO’s project for 2020 is to encourage leadership, sportsmanship and entrepreneurship skills among our members and address more issues, such as mental health and career opportunities, for our members. Additionally, we also aim to encourage diversity among students in Victoria University of Wellington. We plan to promote the diversity of Malaysia through various cultural and social activities (especially Malaysian Week). Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we are unable to proceed with our annual “Bersatu” sporting event and sports carnival. However, the other projects that we hope to proceed is Covid-19 Challenges – which are creating challenges for our members during lockdown. Prizes will be given to winners. To improve diversity, we plan to hold a Malaysian Night in mid/late July that brings Malaysian students together. Although this is a ticketed event, we hope the funding could cover the venue’s rental, in order to subsidise our members’ ticket price. There will also be performance that showcases Malaysian culture. In addition, our Malaysian week is scheduled to be in late August to early September. We plan to showcase Malaysian unique culture and food to other students in Victoria University of Wellington. To address mental health issues, we also plan to invite a professional in mental health area to talk about mental health. It is true that the University has provided counselling, but we hope with our programme, it would reduce the stigma on mental health and encourage our members to seek for professional help if needed. The programme would be held in early August. There would also be networking sessions with other Malaysian professionals based in Wellington in order to connect the Malaysian students with the professionals. Such endeavour is made to help the students improve their employability and meet someone who works in the industry. WMSO also have many other events to bring our members together, including a buddy programme for the new Malaysian students (connecting current students with new students), Chill n Grill, meet and greet, and bureau appreciation night. All events would be promoted via email, WMSO’s newsletter, and our social media platforms – Facebook, and Instagram. Offline promotion would also be made such as making posters and promoting them on Uni’s board.
