Event details

The Victoria Ancient Theater Society puts on a performance of an ancient Greek or Roman play every year. All aspects of the performance are run by students including an original translation of the play from ancient Greek. This year the chosen play is Menander’s Dyskolos. We will be performing on three nights at the end of trimester 2 (dates TBC) in the Student Union Memorial Theater for several hundred spectators from within and outside the university community. The aim of the club is to promote community through drama as well as bring ancient theater to a new generation of audiences to allow students outside of the Classical Studies department to engage with the foundational works of western theater. The core values of our club are inclusion, democracy, and accessability meaning that no acting or theater experience is required to join and no knowledge of ancient history is needed to enjoy the performance. Dyskolos will be performed with period costumes and props made by students and has several chorus sections which will involve live singing and dancing to student compositions. We will be promoting the club through our facebook page (Victoria Ancient Theater Society) and the performances will be advertised by way of posters around campus and facebook posts. VATS usually gets funding from previous years ticket sales and bake sales. Funding from Vic Clubs would be used in conjunction with this to pay our biggest expense, the hiring of the Memorial Theater and the technician required for our tech and dress rehearsals and final performance. This ususally sits in the range of $2200-$2700. Last year’s perfomances were extremely successful so in an ideal world we would be asking for a grant of ~$1000 but understand that this will have to be flexible based on current funds and greatly appreciate any contribution towards this goal.
