Event details
This year, VATS will be performing Medea, a mix of two ancient plays (both called Medea) by Euripides and Seneca. Medea is an ambitious choice for VATS, both because we have decided to produce a mix of Euripides and Seneca’s versions, and because the plays provide us with exciting opportunities to use costumes, props, set and special effects in new ways. Some possibilities for this year’s production include using two actors instead of one to portray the protagonist Medea, having two competing choruses, and portraying originally off-stage scenes (possibly including death scenes) to enhance the play’s vivacity. We would like to include several songs based on choral odes (which were originally sung). We may even have an underworld summoning scene! This will, of course, involve brilliant costumes, set and props. We would like to improve the historical accuracy of our costumes and utilize more historically accurate props and jewellery. Costume will be a special focus as costuming is an interest of our producer and one of our co-directors. In particular, the costuming of Medea is be significant to the play and so will be something we will put much thought into. We also would like to create such as a working chariot (part of which may be built from a previous year’s prop). We plan to market the play by putting posters up around the university and Wellington, online advertising, advertising in Salient magazine, and through the Wellington Classical association and the Classics Department. We realize that marketing is important for the success of the production and will take advertising very seriously. VATS is submitting this funding application so that we can hire the Memorial Theatre, create brilliant costumes, props and set, advertise our play, and feed our cast and crew for all day rehearsals. This year we are asking for a little more money, because COVID affected our ticket sales last year. The funding that Clubs has supplied in the past (ranging from $550 to $1330) has allowed VATS to put on a series of ancient plays to what we believe is a very high standard. Therefore, VATS would greatly appreciate any money that the Victoria University of Wellington Sponsorship Committee can spare and hope to put this money to good use.
