See cover letter for more details. All of our events and projects will be promoted using our social media channels. Weekly Catch Ups: Ongoing social events throughout the year. Open to all interested students at the law school. These catch ups are an easy way for students to interact with other like-minded students and the society, and find out about other events. Funding will cover food for attendees and social activities. Launch: Enables the society to connect with students, share our plans for the year, and obtain student input on the direction of the club. Funding will cover food for attendees. So far, 99 people have expressed interest in the event. Quiz Night Fundraiser: An inclusive and relaxed social event which also acts a fundraiser for Pillars, a charity which provides support to the children of prisoners. Funding will cover food for attendees and prizes. “COVID-19 Isn’t Over” Panel: Panel discussing the gendered impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding will cover koha for the panellists and MC to show our appreciation. Movie Night: A movie screening of a feminism-centric film designed to provide a relaxed and inclusive social environment for students and to encourage discussion on a feminist issue. Funding will cover food attendees and the cost of accessing the film shown (for example, renting the film). Women in Law Week (WILW) Panel 1: The panel provides us with an opportunity to educate students about an aspect of intersectional feminism. Topic is to be confirmed, but it is likely to be around the flexibility of working from home due to COVID and the impact on mothers and women that cannot work. Funding will cover koha for the panellists and MC to show our appreciation. WILW Panel 2: Likely to be about hearing on alternative experiences to traditional law firms. Challenging the pervasive idea that in order to be successful in the legal profession, students must be on the pipeline to a commercial law career in one of the big firms. Funding will cover koha for the panellists and MC to show our appreciation. WILW Panel 3: Topic to be confirmed, likely to be a power structures panel – a continuation of the event from last year. In 2020, this panel – in conjunction with Ngā Rangahautira and the Asian Law Students’ Society – was very well-received. Panellists included the Solicitor-General, the New Zealand Law Society Wellington Vice-President and a lawyer from Te Hunga Rōia (the Māori Law Society). Funding will cover koha for the panellists and MC to show our appreciation. WILW Social Event: Allows students to come together and discuss the different panels and events during the week, as well as their own experiences being a woman at the law school and being a woman about to enter the legal profession. Funding will cover food for attendees. Feminist Moot: A mooting competition which raises awareness of feminist legal theory and tikanga Māori, as well as alternative approaches to dispute resolution. There will be an information session, preliminary rounds, and a final which is open to students, families and the faculty to watch. The Feminist Moots run in both 2019 and 2020 were well received. In 2020, we had a High Court Judge, a solicitor and a partner of a firm judge the final. We hope to make this event a longstanding part of the law school experience. Funding will cover food for judges, koha for judges, printing costs. VUWFLS AGM: provides a forum to update the law school community on the events we ran and the work we did over the course of the previous year. It also allows us to hear from our members and the community about what kind of events they would like us to be running. Funding will cover food for attendees.
