Event details

1. Name Change The history of CanDo is something we are very proud of, and wish to bring more people’s awareness to. However, the language we use for disability has changed from 1992 to 2020. ‘Disability’ is not a bad word, and we should be proud of being ‘disabled’! Like many minority groups, we wish to reclaim the language which has been used to hurt us in the past. More importantly, no one knows what CanDo stands for or is supposed to mean! As a rep group, we should be easy to recognize on and off campus. A name change would also see us align ourselves with off-campus disabled person organisations such as the DPA- Disabled Persons Assembly. To successfully change our name, we would like to purchase a new pull up banner. We will also promote the new change through FB advertising. Because our community is not always at University due to health issues and access issues, we will rely quite heavily on paid online marketing as our FB page does not currently have much traction. 2. Regular Social Event- Disabili-Tea We want to have monthly social events where students with disabilities/impairments will get the opportunity to get together, hang out, eat some food, and chat. This is designed to be a safe space for our community where students will be able to talk to people who are link minded and talk about things they may not otherwise feel comfortable talking about. It will also be an extremely valuable tool for us, and the University, as will allow us to gain an understanding of what accessibility issues exist in the University and how we can potentially fix them. The “Disabili-tea” is also something we wish to run during club’s week and other clubs days. So, the coffee/food/tea we purchase will also be used for those days). This project will be promoted through advertising both online and at University. 3. Regular Social Event- Practicing Mindfulness Through Art This is an open-for-all event where we invite people to join us and paint/draw artwork. Creating art has proven to be an effective therapy technique, and we want to provide students with a space to practice mindfulness and have some time out of their busy lives. Given the huge rates of mental illness within the student population, which falls under our representative group as a disability, this is something that is very important to us. CanDo has also historically been involved with increasing well being at Uni, and this is another step we wish to take. 4. Miscellaneous Accessibility costs Running events for and by disabled people mean that there are some unavoidable costs involved in making the event fully accessible to all. We will need some money to help our members and community get to and from events, especially in the evenings. People within our community may not feel comfortable using public transport due to hostility towards disabled people (especially those with invisible disabilities who are refused the help that they may need getting on/off buses) and they also may not be able to walk long distances. For the evening events, we also need to provide safe transport for those who are not safe/comfortable walking home alone at night. We also need money for printing. We may need more money than most as all our events will need to have printed information which is readily available for those with hearing impairments. We also may need to order braille versions of documents depending on demand, and these undeniable cost more than normal printing. Again, these are imperative costs for accessible events.
